Hello! I am Sara and welcome to the Loyalty Cottage Studio. I am fascinated by colour, pattern and texture and I have based my practice on the experience gained in industry; from working in education and studying for a MA in Design History with a focus on the visual language and historical culture of printed textiles.
I trained at Manchester Polytechnic on a course, which focused primarily on drawing, painting and mixing colour from direct observation.
After graduation, I received a 'Designer into Industry' bursary award from The Royal Society of Arts. My first position working as a textile designer was to set up a mini-screen colour sampling studio using designs from the Sundour and Edinburgh Weavers archive to produce bespoke sampling for clients.
Working for a range of companies, as a textile designer I have experience in originating artwork, colour sampling, developing archival document designs, liaising with textile and wallpaper mills to manufacture product to build co-ordinated collections of fabrics and wallpapers, marketing, promotion and launch of the new product at international trade shows such as Decorex and Heimtex

I use a mixture of traditional techniques and contemporary design methods to produce original artwork and hand-printed textiles.
The creative process starts with an exploration through drawing, visual research and referencing.
Every design begins with the hand-drawn line before being translated to screen for printing.
The screen-printing technique allows for further expression and experimentation using different combinations of colour, pattern and texture.
The hand-printed fabric and everything connected with the making process is produced in-house; including a darkroom to make the screens and a purpose built print table.
Water based pigment dyes are individually mixed and I use fabrics made from natural fibres such as cotton and linen, which are sourced in England
I am connected to the making process drawing heavily on the craft of hand-printing and sewing; from origination to packaging of the product, where each piece is unique, individual and produced in limited editions.
This small set up enables me to be versatile and meet the needs of my clients. There is also a bespoke design and colour sampling service available. I enjoy working to a brief and developing printed fabrics with clients to their requirements.
My work is made to be both enjoyed and functional. I hand produce a range of textiles including napkins, tea-towels, cushions, t-shirts, aprons, bags to bespoke lengths of fabric for home furnishings.
