I set up the Loyalty Cottage studio following a career as a textile designer and educator. I have based my practice on the experience gained in industry, from teaching and researching for a MA in Design History. I trained at Manchester Polytechnic on a course with particular focus on drawing, painting and mixing colour from observation. After graduation, I received a 'Designer into Industry' bursary from The Royal Society of Arts. My first role was to set up a colour-sampling studio using designs from the Sundour and Edinburgh Weavers archive.
As a textile designer I have a background in originating artwork, colour sampling, liaising with textile and wallpaper mills, developing archival document designs to building co-ordinated collections of fabrics and wallpapers, promotion and launch of the new product at international trade shows such as Decorex and Heimtex

I have a lifelong love of colour and surface pattern. I use a mixture of traditional techniques and contemporary design methods to produce original artwork and hand-printed textiles.
The creative process starts with an exploration through drawing, visual research and referencing.
Every design begins with the hand-drawn line before being translated to screen for printing.
The screen-printing technique allows for further expression and experimentation using different combinations of colour, pattern and texture.
The hand-printed textiles and everything connected with the making process is produced in-house; including a darkroom to make the screens and a purpose built print table.
Water based pigment dyes are individually mixed and I use fabrics made from natural fibres such as cotton and linen, which are sourced in England

I am connected to the making process drawing heavily on the craft of hand-printing and sewing; from origination to packaging of the product, where piece is unique, individual and produced in limited editions.
This small set up enables me to be versatile and meet the needs of my clients. There is also a design and colour sampling service
